A local's guide to dog-friendly Chelsea
Chelsea is one of Manhattan's best neighborhoods for a dog. Here's where Kyle loves to walk — and a couple of local things worth knowing.
Between the Hudson River waterfront and its quiet, tree-lined side streets, Chelsea gives dogs room to move and plenty to sniff. Kyle lives and works here, so he plans every walk around the neighborhood's best spots — and around a few local rules worth knowing.
Chelsea Waterside Dog Park
The neighborhood's standout is the Chelsea Waterside dog park, on West 23rd Street by the West Side Highway inside Hudson River Park. A recent overhaul roughly doubled the run to about 7,400 square feet, with separate areas for large and small dogs, canine water-spray jets for hot days, mounds and boulders to explore, and tiered seating with shade for owners. Like the city's other runs, it's open daily from early morning until around 1 a.m.
The Hudson River Park greenway
Just to the west, the Hudson River Park greenway offers long, uninterrupted paths for a proper leashed walk right along the water — a favorite of Kyle's for burning off energy away from traffic, with open views and river breezes.
Good to know: the High Line
The High Line runs right through Chelsea and is one of the city's most beautiful walks — but dogs aren't permitted on it (only service dogs), to protect the narrow pathways and the plantings. Kyle plans routes accordingly, sticking to the dog-friendly streets and waterfront that make Chelsea so walkable.
A few local tips
- In summer, midday pavement gets hot — Kyle shifts walks toward shadier streets and the breezier waterfront, and always brings water.
- The dog run is liveliest in the early morning and after work; a mid-morning or mid-afternoon visit is calmer for shy or senior dogs.
- The greenway is ideal for leashed loops when the runs are crowded.
